The 8 best new features in the Photos app for IOS 11

[amazon_link asins=’B01LW1VU9E’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’photogold01′ marketplace=’UK’ link_id=’d2f8ab77-a43a-11e7-83c7-e712ca61547a’]
While you may not notice them at first, iOS 11 included some pretty significant improvements to the Photos app on your iPhone. These upgrades will help you make your Live Photos livelier, surprise you with photos you totally forgot about, keep your photos and videos organized, and more.

The new Photos app still has a long way to go before it will replace all of your third-party editings apps, but it’s inching closer and closer with each new upgrade and feature, and iOS 11 is just the next step in that progress. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at all of these great new Photos features below.

1  Live Photos Got a Major Update
When Apple released Live Photos in late-2015 (in iOS 9), there wasn’t much you could do besides take a Live Photo. iOS 10 eventually added the ability to edit, crop, and add filters to Live Photos without breaking the animation, but it still wasn’t enough in terms of editing capabilities. Well, iOS 11 has finally added more options.

Most importantly, Live Photos can now be edited to change the still thumbnail, the image you see before using 3D Touch to see and hear the animated portion — and the image that appears to non-Apple users. So if the default still image isn’t very pleasing to look at, you’re no longer stuck with it. Plus, you can trim Live Photos now, allowing you to hide the unsatisfactory sections from being shared.

Live Photos also has effects such as Bounce and Loop now, which turn Live Photos into GIF-like animations. Depending on the applied effect, your photo will either loop indefinitely or cycle back and forth. There’s also a Long Exposure feature that combines all of the frames into one to simulate long exposure photography, where some aspects of the image are in focus while the moving subjects are blurred.

We’ve taken an in-depth look into all of these new features in the article below, so be sure to check that out for more details and previews of everything we’ve found.

2 There Are More Kinds of Memories
Part of the iOS 11 upgrade is a machine learning platform integrated into almost every feature that makes iOS the user-friendly operating system it’s loved for being. Within the Photos app, the Memories feature will be the first aspect improved by machine learning.

According to Apple, Memories will be able to scan your photo library with greater efficiency to identify events and people faster than ever, and includes new categories such as weddings, birthdays, pets, babies, outdoor activities, performances, and sporting events.

3 Memories Videos Get Optimized Portrait View
Okay, you could already rotate your screen to watch a Memories video in either landscape or portrait view, but the video itself would not be optimized for the new view. Now, in iOS 11, when you rotate the screen, the video will automatically be adjusted so that it is optimized for whatever angle you’re watching at.

Don’t Miss: The 5 Best New Camera Features in iOS 11 for iPhone

4  GIFs Are Finally Supported!
Yes, that’s right — real GIF support. While you could always save GIFs to the Photos app on your iPhone from Giphy, Imgur, etc., they would not animate when you viewed them. Now they do. This also applies to the new Bounce and Loop effects for Live Photos — they will play endlessly when you view them.

5 GIFs & Live Photo Effects Get Their Own Album
Now that you can actually watch GIFs in action in the Photos app, along with the new Bounce and Loop effected Live Photos, there’s a new folder called “Animated” for them all. GIFs, Bounces, and Loops will all show up here. This effectively reduces scrolling and searching time when you need to find a certain animated image to share.

6 The People Album Syncs Across Devices
This is a relatively minor change, especially if you only have one iPhone connected to your iCloud account, but it syncs now across all devices so it doesn’t have to start from scratch on each device.

7 You Can Drag & Drop!
If you thought “Drag and Drop” was an iPad-only feature, you’re wrong. Obviously, you can do more useful things with it on an iPad in general, but the iPhone still gets a little bit of that drag-and-drop love.

For instance, you can now drag and drop a photo in one of your albums in the My Albums section to another spot to rearrange the album’s pics. Also, you can drag and drop any photo from any album, or multiple photos at once, into any of your albums you or a third-party created.

8  Portrait Mode & Normal Photos Take Up One Spot
Before, if you wanted to take use Portrait Mode to take a depth effect image, iOS 10 would save the normal photo as a separate file in your Photos app. Now, in iOS 11, the normal photo is saved behind the depth effect version, so you have less clutter in your Camera Roll album.

Stay Tuned for More on iOS 11
Since iOS 11 isn’t set to be released to everyone until the fall, chances are that Apple isn’t done adding features to Photos and upgrading existing ones. We’ll keep this list updated with all of the changes we’re able to find, so be sure to come back and check out what else has changed when a new beta is released.

Godox A1 Smartphone Flash, LED, and Trigger Now Official

After teasing the product and sharing some sample portraits, the Chinese flash manufacturer Godox has now officially announced the A1. It’s a flash, LED, and trigger 3-in-1 unit designed for smartphone cameras.

The Godox A1 features an 8W flash with a color temperature of 6000K (+/- 200K) and a 1W LED light. Power output for the flash can be adjusted with 5 steps from 1/1 to 1/16.

The device also has 2.4GHz and 433MHz wireless transmitters for triggering all Godox flashes through TTL/M/Multi mode. There’s also a 2.5mm sync cord jack if you’d like to trigger your flash that way.

A dedicated GodoxPhoto mobile app lets you make adjustments to flash/LED output as well as control groups of flashes.

An OLED panel on the top of the A1 provides the simple interface through which you can adjust the A1’s settings. Wireless connectivity is through Bluetooth 4.0, which has a 50-meter transmission range on the A1 when linking up with your smartphone.

The small (80x65x23mm/3.15×2.56×0.9in) and light (110g/3.88oz) A1 is powered by a built-in lithium battery that can put out 700 flashes before requiring a recharge. On the bottom of the A1 is a standard tripod mount.

Here are some actual sample portraits captured using a Godox A1, iPhone 7 Plus, and a Godox studio flash:

Here’s an introduction/announcement video showing the A1 in action in creating sample portraits:

Godox says it’s also planning to launch a smaller, single miniature flash for smartphones as well.

The Godox A1 will start shipping for iPhones at the end of August 2017 and for Android sometime in September. It has a price tag of $70 and can be pre-ordered through the Godox online store.

New iPhone 7 may feature DSLR quality lenses

Apple’s innovation may be just about to take a new twist . This year’s iPhone 7 is expected to feature a twin lens system with a standard of performance normally reserved for DSLR cameras. Apple has almost single handed transformed amateur and social photography with the top quality camera featured in successive iPhones . Now it goes one step further with a 12 megapixel camera

With the company predicting its first revenue decline in 13 years, the pressure is on to succeed with this development . The rumour goes that the new iPhone 7 will have a dual-camera system based on LinX Imaging technology. LinX cameras are 12-megapixel dual-camera system that takes two photos at the same time using each lens, then merges the images together using a proprietary algorithm.

In a unique configuration , one lens will have image stabilisation and the other will have 2x to 3x optical zoom.  After purchasing the Israeli company for approximately US $20 million dollars last year .  The iPhone 7 camera system will be able to perform 3D mapping, reduce noise and improve quality of shots in indoor or low light.

It’s odds on only the most expensive iPhone 7 Plus will contain this camera system. Normally new iPhones are announced in September.

New Nikon D500 announced

Just when you thought Nikon had run out of ideas , up pops not one but 2 new powerful cameras with lip smacking specs .  If you can’t afford £5000 for the new D5 camera , the D500 is an extremely capable alternative . The D500 has got some superb features . The 21-megapixel APS-C sensor DSLR is the successor to the D300s with a whole lot more to offer .

Nikon D500

1) 10 FPS Burst with 79 Raw Image Buffer Depth

A 10 frames-per-second continous burst  with a 79 raw image buffer depth should keep most action photographers happy .

Who cares about the D5 when you have this?

Who needs the D5 when you can have this?

2)  4K Video

Not so long ago Nikon didn’t do video mode very well. The jury is out as to whether they can do it well with the D500, but  at least they are trying . Nikon was quiet in 2015 but now Nikon fanboys are exploding with joy at this double announcement . There is auto ISO smoothing to make ISO changes during recording smoother and a 3-axis electronic vibration reduction to create a smoother-looking video.

Yes, serious photographers do use tilty screens too.

The tilting screen is handy for those awkward shots when you can’t quite get the camera high or low enough and see the viewfinder .

3) 153-AF Points

The D500 has 153-AF Points, 99 of them being cross type.  It actually uses the same autofocusing system as the newly-announced D5.

4) Always On Wireless

It features ‘SnapBridge’ which allows the camera to always be connected wirelessly, doing away without the need to establish a connection everytime you need to use it. It uses Bluetooth to keep the camera connected to your smartphone constantly, which should in theory make transferring images quick and easy. Apparently, Nikon will be putting this into all future cameras that they release.

They all look the same, but here's another image of the D500.

They all look the same, but here’s another image of the D500.

Testing this out should / would be totally cool . Please Mr Nikon , I’ll be very careful with it. I promise I won’t drop it or throw it in the river to see if it floats .

Pricing is around £1700 .

Dxo one camera attachment for iPhone

The DxO ONE is claimed to be a revolutionary camera that delivers DSLR image quality in an extremely compact size. At 3.8 oz (108 g) and 2.65″ (6.9 cm) tall, the DxO ONE is so small that it easily fits in a pocket, yet it features an ultra-high quality f/1.8, 32mm equivalent aspherical lens with a variable 6-blade iris and a 1-inch 20.2MP CMOS BSI sensor capable of capturing high-resolution images even in very low light.

The DxO One is for advanced photographers who focus on photo quality. The fixed 32mm-equivalent focal-length lens will limit the audience for it to some extent . Having said that , so will  the £500 price tag  for it . In the UK delivery is planned for Q4 2015 . The problem is you can get quite a decent DSLR for £500 with interchangeable lenses .

Sony’s  Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 IV is a  compact camera featuring the same 20.1-megapixel 1″ Exmor RS CMOS back-illuminated sensor to produce high-resolution still images but also capable of recording 4K video. The built-in Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 2.9x zoom lens provides a 24-70mm (35mm equiv.) range, covering wide-angle to portrait-length. The f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture is great for high quality low light photography. This camera sells for £850 at the moment , making it an interesting choice for photographers.

20.1 MP (effective) 1.0-type Exmor RS CMOS sensor
The world’s first2 1.0-type stacked CMOS image sensor with DRAM chip enables up to 40x super slow motion and up to 1/32000 sec. super-high-speed shutter beyond human perception. The extended circuit features higher signal processing capacity and more than five times faster3 high-speed readout than conventional models.

The DxO One is the company’s first venture into consumer hardware; DxO  is well known for working with phone manufacturers on embedded imaging, but is more commonly known for its DxO OpticsPro raw-processing and DxO FilmPack effects software as well as its lens- and sensor-testing hardware and testing database.

1-inch 20.2MP CMOS BSI sensor may be of great interest to serious photographers

The DxO One lies somewhere in between the iPhone’s camera and DSLRs . It probably need to be priced around £250 to get serious interest from photographers who want something more the iPhone pics.

Made of high-grade aluminum, the DxO ONE is a premium camera that has been engineered with the iPhone and iPad® in mind: it attaches via the Lightning™ connector, turning the beautiful iPhone display into the camera’s viewfinder. The camera swivels 60 degrees in either direction, enabling creative perspectives ie selfies . . This may be the most expensive selfie camera in the world .

The DxO ONE achieves a DxOMark Sensor Score of 70, and up to 85 when using the SuperRAW™ technology (described below), on par with full frame DSLRs and dramatically higher than any smartphone.  DxOMark is the industry-standard protocol for camera and lens image quality assessment, used throughout the camera industry and photography press.

“The image quality of the DxO ONE is stunning,” said Jerome Meniere, CEO and founder of DxO. “It’s possible to shoot crystal-clear images under moonlight, which is incredible for a camera this small. The shallow depth of field and bokeh of the lens at f/1.8 is absolutely perfect for portrait photography.”

A free iOS app enables control of the individual settings on the DxO ONE camera, including aperture (from f/1.8 to f/11), shutter speed (from 15s to 1/8000s), and ISO (from 100 to 51200). In addition to an Auto mode, the DxO ONE app offers various capture modes, including multiple Scene modes, Speed, Aperture Priority, or full Manual mode – and the camera interface automatically adapts to the selected mode for a unique user experience.

The DxO ONE also records outstanding videos at 1080p/30fps or 720p/120fps.

In addition to the built-in microSD™ memory card, photos or video can be automatically stored in the iOS camera roll, where they are immediately displayed on the iPhone’s or iPad’s beautiful high-resolution screen, and can be instantly shared to Facebook®, Instagram®, and Twitter®, leveraging the iPhone’s natural connectivity.

By default, the DxO ONE automatically keeps the valuable high-dynamic RAW ‘digital negative’ files, enabling post-production editing flexibility in RAW conversion programs like DxO OpticsPro and Adobe® Lightroom®.

For the ultimate in noise-free image quality – even in very low light – users can choose to capture images in DxO’s new SuperRAW format. A SuperRAW file is the result of 4 RAW frames captured in quick succession. When the DxO ONE camera is connected to a Mac or PC, the DxO Connect companion software automatically merges the four images together using the very latest in spatial and temporal noise reduction.

“The DxO ONE leverages all of the imaging technologies that we’ve been perfecting for well over a decade,” explained Frederic Guichard, DxO’s Chief Image Scientist. “It brings together mobile imaging miniaturization technologies with a large 1-inch sensor and state-of-the-art software image processing.”

“Being image lovers at DxO, we have built the camera we dreamed of for ourselves and could not find anywhere else: uncompromised image quality always available in our pocket,” concluded Jerome Meniere, CEO and founder of DxO. “We believe that, as the first truly connected camera, the DxO ONE opens a completely new era in digital imaging and we can’t wait to see what incredible images photographers around the world will be able to create with it.”

The DxO ONE is offered at a price of £500 . For a limited time, the DxO ONE comes with free licenses of two award-winning RAW image processing software, DxO OpticsPro (ELITE Edition, sold separately for $199), and DxO FilmPack (ELITE Edition, sold separately for$129), which digitally reproduces the look and feel of analog films

This is Nikon’s first  ever touch-enabled DSLR .  Nikon has been behind the curve on this feature — Canon introduced touch capability to its line of DSLRs back in 2012.

In many ways , the D5500 has an identical spec  to the D5300 .

1. A vari-angle monitor for which a touch-screen interface has been adoptedThe D5500 is the first Nikon digital SLR camera for which a touch-screen interface has been adopted. This enables simple and intuitive operation by those who frequently use smart devices. It is equipped with a large and wide, 3.2-inch, approximately 1037K-dot TFT LCD vari-angle monitor with wide viewing angle. In addition to preserving more than sufficient visibility, the side-hinged vari-angle monitor opens up to 180° to the left, and can be rotated up to 90° clockwise, or up to 180° counter-clockwise while it is open. This ensures flexible shooting from a wide variety of angles, whether low or high, and even when capturing self portraits.

Touch Fn

One of eight frequently used camera settings (Focus-point selection, AF-area mode, Aperture, ISO sensitivity, etc.) can be assigned to this function for use with viewfinder shooting, enabling immediate modification of the assigned setting, and achieving practical operation by simply tapping or sliding a finger across the monitor while looking through the viewfinder.

2. A strong monocoque body, and the world’s smallest, lightest, and slimmest digital SLR camera equipped with a vari-angle monitorA monocoque structure, with which the exterior serves as a frame that protects the internal structure with great strength, has been adopted for the D5500. Use of a carbon-fiber composite material for the front body, where important mechanisms such as the imaging unit are incorporated, and the front and rear covers not only ensures a light weight, but also preserves great strength and durability. In addition, positioning of the integrated circuit board, on which electronic components are mounted, and the imaging unit in nearly the same place, as well as optimization of drive unit positioning have helped to make the camera significantly slimmer. This, in turn, has enabled a deeper grip that provides a firmer, steadier hold on the camera, making it more portable and easier to handle.

3. A built-in Wi-Fi function that enables image transfer and remote shooting through collaboration with smart devicesThe built-in Wi-Fi function makes two-way wireless communications with smart devices such as smartphones and tablets possible. Full-scale photographic works (still images) captured with this digital SLR camera can be uploaded to a smart device from which they can be transferred or shared on SNSs via the Internet. In addition, the live view screen can be displayed on a smart device, enabling use of the smart device for a variety of applications, including capture of self portraits and group photos, as well as remote photography.

4. An effective pixel count of 24.2-million pixels, a Nikon DX-format CMOS sensor, and the EXPEED 4 image-processing engine enable superior image quality and excellent detail

Offering an effective pixel count of 24.2-million pixels and equipped with a Nikon DX-format CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter, the D5500 is able to capture images that make the most of the superior rendering capabilities of NIKKOR lenses. In addition, the EXPEED 4 image-processing engine richly reproduces colors from those in the darkest portions of the frame to those in the brightest portions of the frame for smooth changes between bright and dark portions, which results in images with excellent detail and a three-dimensional appearance. The camera supports a broad range of standard sensitivities, from ISO 100 to 25600, making capture of images exhibiting excellent detail with little noise possible, even in dark surroundings.

5. Even better functions and performance as a full-scale digital SLR cameraThe D5500 offers the superior performance and wide variety of functions that make the rich power of expression, possible only with a full-scale digital SLR camera, possible.

  • Improved Picture Control System: Support for the new Flat Picture Control, the new Clarity adjustment item (for still images only), as well as the ability to apply adjustments in finer increments, greatly expand possibilities for imaging suited to the subject or user intent regarding expression.
  • Scene Recognition System: In order to increase the accuracy of auto control functions, scene information is analyzed using the 2016-pixel RGB sensor and the image sensor. This makes it possible for the autofocus system to accurately track moving subjects, it enables exposure control that takes highlights into consideration, and it makes extremely accurate white balance control possible. In addition, information acquired from the image sensor is used to achieve greater accuracy with exposure and AF control in live view mode (including movie live view).
  • High-speed continuous shooting: The D5500 supports high-speed continuous shooting at up to 5 fps for a maximum of 100 shots (JPEG).
  • Special Effects mode, to which Super Vivid, Pop, and Photo Illustration options have been added, for a total of ten effects that enable more creative expression: The D5500 is equipped with a Special Effects mode, with which effects can be selected and applied with recording of both still images and movies. Preview in the camera monitor before shooting or recording begins allows users to confirm the results of effect selection in the camera monitor in real time. With the addition of Super Vivid, Photo Illustration, and Pop options, the D5500 offers selection from a total of ten special effects. This allows users to easily enjoy dramatic effects like those seen in art and the movies. This mode was adopted to respond to the creative intent of users searching for a way to express their own unique style and creativity.
  • D-Movie function for recording 1920 x 1080/60p full-HD movies: The D5500 is equipped with a D-Movie function that supports recording of smooth 1920 x 1080/60p full-HD movies. In addition to recording via the built-in stereo microphone, the optional Stereo Microphone ME-1 can also be used to record high-quality stereo sound.
  • A built-in Vignette Control function that reduces illumination falloff at image peripheries: The D5500 is the first Nikon DX-format model to offer the Vignette Control function, which processes images to reduce the drop in brightness at the edges of frames (illumination falloff) that sometimes occurs due to the characteristics of photographic lenses.

Stunning Sony Patent details Image Sensor with Per-Pixel Exposure

Sony’s reputation for producing top quality full frame cameras is coming on in leaps and bounds with cameras like the A7R . So how could it invent an image sensor which exposes different parts of an image differently, not by using multiple shots , but all at once on a per-pixel basis ? That’s what Sony have dreamed up in a recent patent.

Discovered by SonyAlphaForum, the patent was published on October 30th. It shows a sensor that can expose individual pixels differently depending on where the darker parts and lighter parts of the scene are.

So dark shadows would become ‘long exposure pixels’ while bright highlights would become ‘short exposure pixels,’ essentially spitting out a high dynamic range image without the need to take multiple exposures and combine them.

The big problem is that taking a picture of a fast moving object could be difficult if not impossible when some pixels are exposed longer than others. But Sony addresses this issue in the patent.

They have suggested using a ‘sensitivity-specific interpolation process’ to come up with a final image by combining an entire short and entire long exposure version and to avoid blur , similar to traditional multiple exposure HDR.

You can take a closer look at the technology by reading the full, not to say fairly obscure to the layman ie me and you , patent by clicking here.
